Jailbirds in Flight
A quiet exhibition of women who taught us how to be free.
Janiya
The unbreakable brightness of youth.
Please take a moment before you continue.
Janiya walks into a room the way morning walks into a window. She is young enough to still be surprised by her own life, and old enough to know exactly what has been asked of her. What is remarkable is not that she has survived—many have—but the light she has refused to trade for it. She still laughs first, still trusts, still lets herself want things out loud. Spend ten minutes with her and you will remember how much of adulthood is quiet forgetting, and how much can be recovered by simply being near someone who has not yet forgotten.
Ten minutes with Janiya
A short film in the Jailbirds in Flight series. Running time approximately ten minutes. Please watch, if you can, in one sitting.
Filmed inside — part of the ongoing project to change the way our culture sees the women it puts behind walls.
Joy
Janiya taught us that joy is not naïve—it is defiant. To laugh, to hope, to keep loving out loud in the middle of a world that has given you every reason not to is one of the oldest forms of freedom. Her brightness is not something that happened to her. It is something she keeps choosing, morning after morning.
