Jailbirds in Flight
A quiet exhibition of women who taught us how to be free.
Lyric
The instrument of a whole life.
Please take a moment before you continue.
Lyric's name is not accidental. She is one of those people whose inner life keeps time with something older than she is—part poet, part witness, part translator of feelings the rest of us have not yet found language for. She has an ear for the sentence underneath the sentence. She notices the woman who is trying not to cry. She turns small moments into song, and returns them to whoever needs them most. Spend ten minutes with her and you will begin to hear your own life differently—the way a familiar room sounds new after someone opens the window.
Ten minutes with Lyric
A short film in the Jailbirds in Flight series. Running time approximately ten minutes. Please watch, if you can, in one sitting.
Filmed inside — part of the ongoing project to change the way our culture sees the women it puts behind walls.
Attention
Lyric taught us that attention is the beginning of love. She notices what the rest of us hurry past—the sentence underneath the sentence, the woman trying not to cry—and returns it as language, as witness, as song. To pay attention the way she does is to make the ordinary world briefly holy, and to remind us that human flourishing begins with what we are willing to see.
A favorite line from Lyric will live here — one sentence that opens the whole door.
